Goals and Future Projects
By March, 2010, our goal is to have the garden ready for growing and harvesting, the chicken area built with chickens producing eggs for the people, and some cattle for community milk.
Goals:
~Maintain an open, honest and culturally sensitive and appropriate relationship with the colony.
~Always listen to the needs of the people, and respond appropriately.
~Continue to build a strong collaborative foundation with the people of the colony.
~Make sure that every penny donated is going to a much needed, sustainable project.
~Always remember the children and their future in relationship to the projects we are creating and implementing.
Future Projects We Hope to Implement:
1. Job training and creation (for example, sewing training for the women, sewing machines, auto rickshaws and or driving school for the men) These types of jobs are easy for them to do a lone with out the attached stigmas, however the cost of the trainings are high compared to what the people have financially from begging.
2. Campaigns for educating people about leprosy, hoping to reduce stigma and marginalization
3. Upper level healthcare for the patients and thier children (who are not infected but all children need medical support)
4. Funding for the children's home and school where the children are now residing and going to school temporarily. (see number 6).
5. Tuition for higher education for those 16 years and older (about $100 USD per year).
6. Eventually, we would like to build a school from Pre-k to Grade 12. We are searching for the best location, as the children love to live near their families, but due to the isolation of the colony, it would be very difficult to get teachers to travel that distance to teach. We are looking into sustainable schooling for them.
7. Community development projects such as health and nutrition training, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, alcohol abuse prevention and education, etc.
